Winter WILL End…Someday!?!

In what can only be described as the least surprising development in the history of show business, the head of HBO would love to see his cash cow CASH COW™ go on well past the point the creators think it needs to go. Fortunately, the producers know how to play the Game of Scheduling. Because if you play the Game of Scheduling either you get points in syndication….or you die!

Iron Man's Dad to Try to Kill God?

Looks like Dominic Cooper, famous for playing Howard Stark (aka Iron Man’s pappa) in Captain America is the new front runner to play the lead in Preacher; a Vertigo Comics series about a disillusioned preacher trying to find and kill the creator. This property has been in development many times, so we are skeptical. Sound like a good choice IF they move forward?

Best Superhero Movies That Are NOT DC/Marvel Universe

If Sony get REALLY desperate…

For years, Marvel couldn’t get a movie off the ground and DC owned the big screen with Superman and Batman. Eventually, Marvel caught and passed DC; which will try to return to the pinnacle with Batsoup. Today we take a look at the superhero films that excelled despite not having the built in advantage of the DC/Marvel banner. And as a Gabbing Geek bonus, we’ll also tell you where the film’s characters would best fit if you shoehorned it into the DC or Marvel comicverse. Cuz we’re awesome like that. If you love superheroes just as much as us and you’re in the process of trying to get your children to share the same passion as you, why don’t you try to convince them through buying superhero capes. Who doesn’t love wearing a costume?

Bad Performances in Good Superhero Movies

MSDSTEE EC004
Steel is neither

On Tuesday, we talked about actors who gave a strong performance in a stinker of a superhero flick. While it is always a shame to waste a strong performance in a turd of a film, isn’t is a greater sin to crap on the rug in an otherwise fine superhero motion picture? Let’s take a look at some people who need to call the carpet cleaners, because they did just that!

Good Performances in Bad Superhero Movies

It would have been a bad movie, but Cage would have been amazing!

Today we celebrate the roses that grew out of a steaming pile of horse manure. It’s easy to bask in the accolades of a strong performance in an epic superhero flick. Chris Reeve got us all started with his turn in Superman. Ledger was all-time in the brilliant Dark Knight. RDJ was amazing in the transformative Iron Man. But what about the people who rise to the occasion in a real stinker? Let’s give them their moment in the sun!

It is often said on the Gabbing Geek podcast (listen to it!) that I don’t read comics.  Well I did once.  So in talking to my buddy Phil Ray the other day, he asked me to write a post on my ten favorite Trade Paperbacks ever (“other than Watchmen, of course”). I would tell him writing for a website is not like being a DJ at da club because we don’t take requests, but he did introduce me to my ex-wife (thanks, jerk) so here we go…

The Best and Worst Performances in a Superhero Movie By Oscar Winning Actors

Spared from the bottom five solely because of lowered expectations?
Spared from the bottom five solely because of lowered expectations?

It’s Oscar season, and we are looking for a Gabbing Geek way to cover Hollywood’s biggest night, so today we take a look at the best and worst performances by an Oscar Winning performer while playing a character in a comic book superhero film.  Some of them were future winners when they donned the tights, others already had the Oscars on the shelf.

We are leaving out movies like Teen Age Mutant Ninja Turtles and other non-superhero comic films, so you gotta be a superhero property to be eligible here! So who is the best and who is the worst (and a bonus for comic completionists, the full list of every Oscar winning performer to play in the genre!)?  Let’s read on, shall we?

Watson's Top Ten Movies of 2014!

Ah.  Now we get to the cream of the crop!  The ten best films of 2014!  Hope you enjoyed your year of films as much as I did mine.  This was a strong year for movies; both blockbuster and arthouse.  While there wasn’t an all-time Hall of Fame entry (like Dark Knight or Godfather), we did have many 5 star worthy films.   Any of these ten films would have been a worthy choice for #1, in fact many of them even flirted with the top spot during the year, but when the dust settled here was the final list.
