Watson Predicts the 2019 Oscar Winners

Let’s face it.  2018 was a weak year in film.

As you’ll see from my annual countdown, I liked some films but there were no all-time classics. No contenders for the Watson Top 25.  Beyond even favorites, it was particularly weak for Oscar bait. There was not one film this year that stands worthy of Best Picture.

I understand the knock on Oscars being snooty…but I AM snooty too! So, I typically think the Oscars honors a laudable film.  This year? Not so much.

Forget about getting it wrong. The Oscars have no chance of that, because there is no RIGHT answer! This might be the right year to do a show without a host, because there aren’t any worthy Beat Picture candidates for the host to present.

With that uplifting intro, here are my predictions…

Gabbing Geek Game of Thrones Death Draft! (Spoiler Heavy!)

When you play the Gabbing Geek Game of Thrones Death Draft, you either win…or you complain about Septa Unella for the next two years!

We at Gabbing Geek were worried that soon to be released spoilers, a bevy of cast photos, and the dreaded NSA/Wikileaks/Instagram Industrial Military Complex would reveal too much, so we conducted our way-too-early draft of which of our favorite characters will die in the final season of one of our favorite TV shows ever.

In Season 7, we had four players drafting (Watson, Jenny, Ryan, and Tom), but this time we added the full gang of Geeks who watch the show; adding to the S7 crew Jonathan, Halbrook, and Jimmy! We are now seven players, fighting for glory in the Eyes of the Seven.

Sadly, some drafted so poorly, they will need help from the Old Gods and the New!

Who will climb the stairs to the Iron Throne? Who will eat the Ser Pounce’s butt?

Let’s see!

(Spoilers….so many Spoilers!)

Watson’s 25 Favorite Video Games of All-Time

Lists. Lists. Lists. I’ve been doing a lot of favorite lists lately, and next up is video games!

The Atari 2600, which represented the dawn of quality home gaming, was released when I was 2 years old… so my whole life has been pretty much framed by the entirety of the video game era.

I’ve owned the Oddessy, Atari 2600, Apple IIe, Nintendo, Sega Genesis, Super Nintendo, Nintendo 64, PC, PlayStation 1, PlayStation 2, Nintendo Wii, XBox 360, Xbox One, multiple handheld games systems, and… of course…an Alienware gaming laptop.

Because of the breadth of my gaming history, my list covers the full gaming era and plots across all platforms: early console games, arcade consoles, PC gaming, and modern, ultra-realistic consoles.

I always try not to have multiple versions of a series in my lists, so I will include my favorite installment as a stand-in. Otherwise, half of my list would be Call of Duty...

Watson’s 20 Favorite Superheroes of All-Time

I am list crazy these days.  Time to tackle my favorite superheroes ever. This is Gabbing GEEK after all.

I am going to warn you.  My list is DC heavy! Only 4 of my 20 are Marvel characters… and though I like non-mainstream superhero stories, no other company scored a character in the top 20.

I ranked my characters based on their appearance in all mediums: comics, movies, cartoons, and toys.  There are some characters where I liked their film versions, but disliked their comic version so much (Wolverine comes to mind) that they didn’t make the cut!

I recently counted down my favorite songs of all-time, and mentioned how incredibly difficult that was. Enjoyment of music is so ephemeral, that it took a lot of effort just to get the list to fifty; let alone arrange them in order.

But when I sat down to rank my favorite TV shows, it was a little easier.  As when I ranked my favorite movies, there are some tough choices, but it was mostly around the edges of the list.  What got left off?  What was ranked ahead of another?  The decisions were all within a few spots of each other.

Watson Ranks the Top 150 Movies of 2018

By William Watson

It was a really weird year for movies. In 2018, there may not have been a film worthy of Best Picture, but I set a personal record, so there is something worth celebrating.  In this down year in movies, I broke my all-time personal record from 2014 and watched 150 new movies.  So let’s look back at the year in film with my annual review of all the new releases I saw!

Watson’s Fifty Favorite Songs of All-Time

Image result for jukebox

Back in the day, there was no more vulnerable of a time than when someone was looking through your CD case.

You knew that they were judging you based solely on the contents of those plastic sheets, in over-sized binders.  Would your tastes be good enough?  Would you be disqualified as a friend or lover because you had one too many candy pop CDs? It was brutal!

Well, here we are.

The modern equivalent of letting you look through my CD case by counting down my Top 50 songs of all-time.

As hard as my Top 25 movies list was, this one was MUCH harder!  Not only is it tough to compare your love for songs, but I also have great tastes in movies.

My taste in music has always been a little suspect… so be gentle…

Could you have imagined the idea of Avengers: Infinity War back in 1989? (A history of superhero adaptations)

We are about to witness a historic moment in superhero adaptations. Sure we’ve had an Avengers movie or three.

Sure that airport scene in Civil War felt like something out of big summer Annual story.

Sure a movie teaming up Thor, Hulk, Valkyrie, and featuring Dr Strange, felt eventful.

But Infinity War feels like something new and different…
